Every day, millions of smallholder farmers in Nigeria use financial services to increase and improve their agricultural production. However, there are several barriers limiting access to financial services, including the inability to repay loans, savings and collaterals. In Nigeria, over 38 million smallholder farmers in Nigeria lack access to finance to increase their agricultural production.

Today, we are introducing CashCard, a digital service that enables smallholder farmers in rural Nigeria receive digital payments and build their financial identity. CashCard provides key features of financial services - bank-less savings, accessing farm inputs on credit, market price updates, ease of payment, and more. With CashCard, we are making financial services more accessible to millions of Nigeria’s smallholder farmers without going to a bank - all you need is a mobile phone.

Why do you need CashCard?
These are some of the benefits rolling out across CashCard over the coming weeks and months.

  • Bank-Less Savings
As a farmer, you can easily save for the things you need without having a bank account. You can save money at your local farm input shop that is a walking distance from you.

  • Financial Identity
Most of the time, financial Institutions find it hard to identify creditworthy farmers. With our fully integrated creditworthiness system, you can build a financial identity for yourself making you eligible for micro-credit.

  • Farm Inputs on Credit
While using CashCard to build your financial identity, you can access farm inputs - agro-chemicals, improved seeds, machinery, etc - on credit through our CashCard agents and payback "small-small".

  • Market Price Updates
Knowledge of the market price of agricultural products is very important to smallholder farmers. You will receive market price updates via SMS at no extra cost.

  • Get Paid
During harvest time, buyers visit rural markets to buy from smallholder farmers. Most of these buyers do not carry cash on them which means farmers without a bank account probably won't get paid or will be saddled with the responsibility of finding someone with a bank account to help them receive the payment. With their phone number, a buyer can send money to a smallholder farmer from any Nigerian bank easily and securely.

  • Local Languages Supported
In addition to the benefits mentioned above, we have added a language mode, which reduces the language barrier. You can access CashCard in your local language. CashCard currently supports Hausa, Yoruba and English Languages.

Our focus in the long run...

In the long run, CashCard is building on the principle of “leaving no one behind” by focusing on three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They are listed as follows;

  • End Poverty (Goal 1)
Part of the target being achieved by CashCard for this goal is to make sure that all men and women, in particular, the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance.

  • Zero Hunger (Goal 2)
CashCard brings the possibility of doubling the agricultural productivity and incomes of smallholder farmers to achieve the zero hunger goal.

  • Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8)
To achieve this goal, CashCard is strengthening the capacity of domestic financial institutions to encourage and expand access to banking, insurance and financial services for smallholder farmers.

We are working hard to bring more exciting updates to CashCard for smallholder farmers in Nigeria and to develop more partnerships in emerging markets to make it useful. No matter where you are in Nigeria, we want to make CashCard the best way for you to get financially included, and other incentives that matter most to you.

If you are excited as we are about this and would like to be a part of people changing the narrative around financial inclusion for farmers, register here to become a CashCard agent, helping farmers get registered, save and build credibility to get loans for farm inputs on cashCard.
The perks? You’ll receive attractive commissions, unique products, training, and experience.

Sounds very exciting and interesting. How can smallscale WOMEN farmers in particular, benefit. The main challenge, for now, is the literacy level in most of our rural communities and high level of skepticism. We have been financially deceived and traumatized for so long.

Good idea. Hope your company will also look into setting up a trading platform where farmers and buyers of agric produce/products can trade, while your company will charge a percentage for the service. As a crop farmer, this is a gap I have observed over time.
